The Nexus
The tavern known as Roland's Cavern sits right in the center of an odd, ever changing landscape called "The Nexus" by its inhabitants. It's called this because it's a crossway of space and time, literally a meeting point where doorways of any kind can open up from anywhere.
Like the Cavern, the Nexus seems to be a living, thinking thing and if that's the case it certainly has a twisted sense of humor. Ever changing, don't count on taking a walk through the woods one day and expecting to find things the same the next time you stroll through them.
There are, however, several locations that remain static:
Indoors
The Cavern-
The heart of the land, where all forms of life cross each other some times peaceful, sometimes not so peaceful. Roland's Cavern is a large, natural cave turned into an inn and tavern. It includes all the standards of any tavern, it has rooms for rent upstairs, a bar and kitchen, a common room, a stage, fireplace, catacombs, a Jello Pool….
Sometimes a bartender shows up to serve the public, other times the bar is self serve, but oddly enough the kitchen and bar always seem to be fully stocked either way, and any damage done to the Cavern has a mysterious way of repairing itself....
Jello Pool-
You know you’re in an interesting place when it’s most sordid piece of history rests in a pool of Jello.
This deceptively calm pool of green Jello sits in the pool room beside the regular swimming pool. Don’t be alarmed if you see something moving in there. Or get the hell out as fast as you can, whichever works.
Catacombs-
No one knows if it’s even possible to map how far these dank, shadowed tunnels go, some say they end up in caves and tunnels all the way out to the cliffs. It’s unsure how many are buried there and who they are but perhaps that’s not as important a question as who, or what, has stayed dead.
A family of freaks lives down there (among other things) and will sometimes help lost explorers if their manners are good.
There are several known entrances and exits to the catacombs, including one in the Cavern, one that opens into the tunnels around the Pirates' Cove, and one in the Ruined Graveyard.
The Library-
Located in the Cavern, the library has every written work you can imagine and a lot of them you can’t. Oddly, it’s simple to find whatever you happen to be looking for, almost as if the books are shifting about by themselves to accommodate you.
Upstairs-
Offically, there rooms 1 through 13 upstairs for people to make use of, though that number seems to shift and change. As a matter of fact, the rooms themselves seem to shift and change an awful lot...
Outdoors
Parking Lot-
Located on top of the Cavern, it's just a normal parking lot that just happens to be able to hold spaceships, horses, riding turtles, giant battle robots…stuff like that, along with cars. Please note that all park there at their own risk and all parking disputes should be settled amongst the parties involved, providing it doesn’t end with someone running a vehicle (or animal) through the wall. Thank you.
The Forest-
Since the forest seems to change on a whim no one is quite sure how far they go. The Cavern is surrounded on all sides by deep, lovely woods that seem to have every sort of tree and plant imaginable within their depths and are the home of many wondrous people and creatures. While there are a few static landmarks, it seems a bit hard to map, apparently some of the trees and such don’t like just standing still all day.
Gazebo-
Standing a little ways away from the Cavern in the woods, this pristine little structure is a beautiful spot for all forms of entertainment and revelry.
The Lake
This peaceful lake has been used several times for nefarious purposes and some places can be quite dangerous to the unwary. The bottom of it holds the remains of many ships, water and space, and the tail end of a crashed space ship is in fact visible above the surface when the water level is low.
The Scar-
A few miles behind the Cavern there is a place where the growth of the forest seems to have been stunted, signs of a great disaster found everywhere. Only recently has the forest started to creep in and start reclaiming everything. It forms a circle a mile in diameter, at the center of which lays a ruined tree split up the middle, and the closer you get to it, the less regrowth there is. This tree still holds a faint aura of evil from the being it housed within it for years...T'kalla. While T'kalla has been banished into limbo and its presence is no longer in the Nexus, that spot remains rotting and cold and probably will forever....people are warned to be cautious around that area or avoid it entirely.
Ruined Graveyard
This used to be an old graveyard that rests within the blast zone around T'kalla's tree. A necromancer raised all the corpses resting there during the battle against T'kalla and only a few of them returned to their graves. A few gravestones and crypts survived the disaster and are visible among the ruins.
There is an entrance into the catacombs still accessible there.
The Beach-
This beautiful stretch of sand bordering the sea is the perfect place for a moonlit stroll, or perhaps a romantic trysting spot, or a nice peaceful place to hold a duel to the death. Whatever works for you.
The Pirates' Cove
Just out of sight of the lighthouse, where the cliffs meet the sea, time and waves have formed a great cave. Surrounded by reefs and hidden from every angle except straight from the sea, it’s made a perfect hideout for some of the most scurvy scum in the Nexus. Within the cove is a network of caves and tunnels where the pirates have made their home. There are several entrances from the land, not all of them found, including an old well in the forest, and maybe even a few from the catacombs….
But adventurers should beware, not only are there traps and tricks of all form, but yet unexplored caves could yield something worse than pirates as your enemy…
Lighthouse Remains
A long jetty of rock and sand juts out from the beach, on the end of which stands what was once a proud lighthouse. Like T'kalla's tree, this lighthouse once guarded an evil power that was freed and ultimately destroyed during the great battle. Very little of the old lighthouse remains, mostly it's a shell a few people have tried to fix. Outside it, surviving the original destruction, is a grave marker that marks the resting place of one Dr. Amichi Vandragon.
Ma Bell Payphone-
It's a payphone, what did you expect? Shows up in the oddest places...
