Why it had happened was a footnote to Zach, the son of an acclaimed soldier, and Ivy the daughter of the local village madman and inventor. It was, in fact, a device of his making that tore a rip in reality and sent the two friends far back into history where they caused a major change simply by arriving.
Their landing ended up causing the death of a famous knight, who was legendary in their time for rescuing the queen from certain death. Once they realized it, Zach and Ivy decided on the advice of one of Zach's ancestors to try and remedy the situation and save the queen themselves. To help them, the old woman gave them weapons and armor as well as a few choice items that held what could only be called magic. To Zach she gave a necklace with a pendant fashioned into the shape of a sword that had belonged to a legendary warrior with a stern warning to never use it unless he had to. To Ivy she gave a pair of ingeniously crafted wrist blades and a handful of glowing stones, also with a warning to be careful. Folded in with the blade was a note that claimed to be from the wife of the warrior, who had crafted both the blades and the pendant, she seemed to know that someone from the future would get a hold of it and also hinted at several other items scattered across the land with a mysterious name attached to it: Flamestrong.
The more the two traveled, the more they found themselves embroiled in the ongoing war between the kingdom's increasingly long reaching religion which preached of the evils of magic, and the mysterious Magi. The pair were attacked on the road by a group of orcs led by a mysterious silver haired figure Zach had seen in a dream. While they managed to fight them off, the hooded man cautioned them and told them to rescue the queen and then head for the Temple of the Moon in the south.
The two managed to rescue the queen where she was being held not by a group of magi as had first been thought, but by a group of shadowy beasts. As they did so, Zach discovered wearing the necklace endowed him with incredible fighting abilities and gave way to a voice instructing him what to do. But it also left him tired and seemed to change his personality momentarily. Ivy, the logical scientist of the pair, found using the stones allowed her to tap into her latent magical abilities, allowing her to control fire for a time.
Rescuing the queen didn't end their troubles, however. When they returned Her Majesty to her capitol city, they found the king gone and the Cardinal of the Church of the Holy Light tightening his grip on the entire land. After revealing himself to be a madman to Ivy and Zach, he had them locked into the dungeon and attempted to kill the queen. They managed to save her with the help of Cosima, the queen's personal servant from the far islands with magical abilities including a rare ability to heal with a touch. They battled the Cardinal in the royal quarter and found to their shock that he wielded magical abilities far beyond what anyone had seen.
They managed to escape with Cosima healing the queen's wounds and traveled into the night to outrun the Cardinal and his men...and probably far worse.
Ivy was the first to mention they ought to head south to the Temple of the Moon and surprisingly both Cosima and the queen agreed. It was a safe haven where no one was allowed to use violence though admittedly the Cardinal wasn't likely to care much about a 'pagan' temple's rules.
Ivy pushed a lock of shaggy red hair out of her face and squinted gray green eyes at their surroundings. Cosima knew how to get there so she was leading the way with Zach on guard and Ivy helping the exhausted queen along.
Cosima kept glancing back worriedly but didn't slow their pace too much. They had to keep going if they were going to have any hope of getting to the Temple before the Cardinal caught up with them.
