"So we do nothing?" Yiska looked from one to the other. "I only hope these golems and their masters move well away before the Great Hunt."

"Maybe scout out to get a clue what they're up to? I think that'll probably be up to your father and the elders, but that seems like the most logical move at the moment." Sinjun shrugged.

Hahji turned his rheumy eyes on Sinjun. "I don't know if that is wise, but I suppose we have no other choice. We cannot spread this news around, so I suggest my young friends that you speak first to Moraji and receive his council. Undoubtedly he will look to you for advice, Sinjun, since you are the most knowledgeable among us on the subject of magic."

She smiled ruefully. "My aunt is considered one of the most skilled golem mages in centuries, it's nice that the knowledge I learned from her could come to some use."

Hahji smiled with a touch of sadness. "Knowledge, no matter the source, always has its uses, though we may not always be proud of why we know."
Yiska got to his feet. "Thank you for speaking with us, Elder Hahji. I will go to my father now."
Hahji looked tired, but pleased that the youth was so polite. "Feel free to visit me any time, young shaman." His grin was partially toothless. "And perhaps you could bring me some of your mother's soft milled bread."
"Of course, Elder Hahji. It will be my pleasure."

Sinjun gave the old hunter a bright smile and nodded politely, following Yiksa out of the hut. She looked out over the horizon thoughtfully. She couldn't see anything at the moment. "I wonder if the human with metal he saw was someone in armor. That would be my guess, anyway."

"You're most likely correct, Sinjun." Yiska nodded fervently. He started walking towards his father's tent. "I hadn't thought of that, you're very clever." He grinned at her.

"You would have thought of it eventually," she demurred, blushing a bit. "What do you think your father will want to do?"

"He may send out a few to scout and only that. We need more information about these golems and the armored man before we do anything else. We will not launch an offensive attack, only defensive to protect our families."

"I'm hoping it won't come to that," Sinjun murmured. "Golems can only follow commands so it's likely they won't attack unless they attack first. The fact they aren't paying attention to the village is a good sign."

Yiska nodded in agreement. They ducked under the tent flap an found Tahki squatting near the stoves, stirring feverishly at a pot, clanking the spoon a few too many times on the rim, and setting aside the spoon to wring at the corner of her apron anxiously, then start again. Whatever she was cooking had clearly been done some time ago.
"Yiska!" She got to her feet and bushed down her dress. "What in the spirits name have you done to make Fahla so angry? She bustled in here in a tyrade, and she said a few choice words about Sinjun. I didn't allow her to continue, but what exactly happened?"
"I was making medicines with Sinjun, and I took her hand because she is my friend. Sama saw this and ran to tell her mother who came out and accused us of... mischief."

Sinjun's explanation was a little more succinct and surprisingly tart for the usually mild mannered girl. "She's a selfish, meddling old bitch."

"Is that all," Tahki laughed so hard she had to catch her breath. "She made it sound as if..."
She breathed in and out as she composed herself. "Yiska, I know what Fahla wishes of you, to have us marry you to her daughter..."
Yiska opened his mouth but Tahki raised a hand to stop him. "Your happiness is in account, Yiska. If marriage to Sama makes you unhappy then the match will not be made."
Yiska breathed a sigh of relief and smiled at Sinjun. Tahki looked from one to the other silently, frowning lightly. "We will discuss this matter at another time, as a family. Now, it looked as if you two have something on your mind. Tell me, Yiska."
"Hahji has seen some strange beings move in the desert, something Sinjun calls golems. There is a human among them. We would speak to father about this."

"On the brighter side, Tahki, if you DO marry Yiska off to Sama, you'll get to spend lots and lots and lots and LOTS of time with Fahla," Sinjun said innocently. She sobered as Yiska spoke, nodding. "I don't think the village is in danger from them directly but it would probably be good to find out what exactly they're looking for."

Tahki groaned and rubbed her hands over her eyes. "I already suffer enough from that woman out of hospitality. Spirits give us a way to keep her from tapping at my door." She lowered her hands and chuckled.
"Yes," she sobered. "That will be a matter to bring to Moraji. He will be returning shortly from the council tent." Tahki let out a sigh and looked sad. He had been away so often, it was lonely in an empty tent. She showed her love through cooking and always had something delicious on hand, which may be one reason why Fahla came to visit so often, to eat her food.
