Nik was happy to speak of his homeland but was visibly reluctant to talk about the circumstances that had resulted in him becoming a vampire. When they had been rescuing Ambra, he'd given them a bare bones account and Kae had picked up on little things both of them had said to know the man who had turned them had been in love with Nik and had turned him against his will. The same vampire had banished Ambra into slavery to a demon, so needless to say, neither one of them liked speaking of it. She tapped something out and leaned to the side to give Amon a clear view. "We're down to just a few areas now. One of the major lairs is definitely in one of the cities. Florence, maybe. Or Rome. No wonder Jaz ran off. She hates Rome."

“Then we’ll have to investigate them both, if we can’t get an accurate location,” Amon nodded, surveying the feed as the computer worked.
Vampire covens had traditionally been underground, or housed in a large area. Originally secretive, humans who were allowed access inside usually could not, or would not, leave, either enslaved for blood-letting or killed completely. Now, as the world was romanced by vampirism, vampire covens were exposed to the public, usually in the form of a night club or theater where the macabre was embraced. When word spread throughout these in-crowds, humans looking for a thrill would line up at the door to get a taste of it.

Kae was annoyed by that trend but had to admit that it made hunting a bit easier. However, it made drawing victims in a lot easier as well. Case in point: Tlaz had owned a nightclub.
She rubbed her cheek against his arm. "Do you ever miss her?" It was a simple, quiet question, no jealousy. It was hard to be jealous when Amon had killed Tlaz to defend Kae, but she worried about the long term effects on his mind and body from what Tlaz had done to him.

Amon shook his head. “Not even a little bit. I wasn’t myself when she had a hold on me, but you broke through that.” He raised his hands and placed them on her shoulders and bent to place a soft kiss on the top of her head. “I have you to thank for bringing me to my senses.”

"Well, granted, she was really hot and sex has always been your weakness." She tugged a lock of his hair playfully.

Amon chuckled. “A beautiful body does not necessarily a beautiful woman make. Though sex is nice. As a matter of fact…”
He spun her chair with a flick of his hand so she faced him, bent to draw one arm against her legs and the other behind her back, sweeping her upwards into his arms, cradling her against his arms with a mischievous grin.

Kae yipped in surprise when he spun her, then laughed when he picked her up, letting her forehead rest against his. She curled her arms around him, kissing him softly. It was terribly girly to get turned on by how strong Amon was and how easily he could carry her around, but hell, she could be stereotypically girly about some things. Especially when she had a hot vampire as a lover.

Amon brushed his lips across hers, meeting her lips gently. He pressed his forehead against hers a moment, then turned and carried her up the stairs into the bedroom. The events of late had them quite preoccupied and it was time that he turned his attention from work and onto his lover. He was all to willing to spend time pleasuring her.
They lay in each other’s arms for some time after they had made love, Kae becoming well worn out, a thing which Amon wished he could still share with her. He pulled the blanket over her as she curled up against him and lapsed into sleep. He brushed a lock of hair gently aside and kissed her forehead as she slept.

Kae curled against his side, her sleep far more peaceful than it had been when he'd first met her. She rarely slept more than a couple of hours back then, either ripped out of nightmares or so paranoid the slightest noise would wake her. Amon made her feel safe.

If she did have nightmares, himself usually vigilant and nearby, he would stroke her hair gently until she was soothed. He had books in arm’s reach on a bookshelf, having gone through many of them, and would pause to look at Kae with a soft smile. How different she looked as she slept, completely unguarded and unrestrained. It made him happy to know that she could find that complete trust in him.
He remembered the day they crossed paths. They were both after the same target, and had sized each other up in those moments they saw one another, both in competition for the score. At that time, he had only seen her as something in his way. He had been willing to go through her to get his assignment accomplished. But something in her eyes gave him pause.
She had such passion in her eyes… it was as if she did not possesses one single soul but many, so fierce was her stare. He had not met a mortal quite like her. It was true he could kill her instantly, he had no doubt about that, but she would go down fighting until the end. That had kindled something in him that night, a stirring inside him that he had not felt in some time, something more than simply being a killer.
Kae had stirred emotion inside him.

One of the computers suddenly beeped, not very loudly, indicating someone had tried to cross the wards around the yard and had been repelled. Kae had set the alarms to be louder depending on how serious the breach. This wasn't a serious one at all, in fact it was an attempt at a breach. Kae stirred and lifted her head, blinking. "What's that?"

Amon lifted his head and set aside the book he had been reading and looked towards the bedroom doorway, ajar since no one was with them and the house was secure. He looked down at Kae as she stirred sleepily.
“It’s just an alarm, I’ll go check it out.”
Amon was a blur as one moment he was beside her and the next he was in front of the computer, clicking at the mouse to find out what breach it had indicated. His eyes flicked to a second screen as he saw movement there. It was a few teenagers come to investigate the “creepy old house” at the end of the street. By the way they were moving they were likely intoxicated. He could hear their bawdy laughter from here.

"They're lucky they didn't get thrown clear across the street," Kae said from the doorway, glaring at the kids grumpily. She straightened up when she caught sight of a figure shifting in the alley across the street. It might not have set off the alarms but it had been watching. It disappeared with a blurred motion that could only be a vampire. "Interesting...."

Amon looked at her and then up at the screen she had been observing. As the figure had disappeared he saw only the alley way.
“What’s interesting?”
He looked back to the first screen at the teenagers stumbling about.
“Should I take care of them?” He smiled in amusement.

"There was someone watching. Vampire." She played it back so he could see. "Scoping out our defenses, it's been a while since someone has cared enough to do that..." The last one had been Tlaz, she thought without saying it out loud. She'd sent people to kill Kae and had been very annoyed they couldn't breach her defenses although Tlaz herself probably could have at the time if she hadn't considered such things beneath her dignity.
She cocked an eyebrow at the screen. "Only if you want to."
