“Could have sent the kids as test subjects,” he mused, that spark of humor gone.
Amon looked at her. “They’ll draw a crowd, complaints… best we don’t gain any more attention than we need. I’ll see to it.”
He strode out of the room, taking a side door. Amon did not intend to let the kids see him, not to scare them off by the mere image of a disapproving male. He wanted to fuck with them.
Once outside, he shifted, digging his heel into the soil and whipping through the night air like a specter.
He was like the wind, brushing at their clothes, pulling at their hair, making hissing noises as he passed them. He had them spooked all right. Amon wrinkled his nose at the sharp smell of urine as the kids finally had enough of the ghostly presence, and ran off.
He stopped in the shadows, chuckling to himself and began to walk back towards the side door when he stopped in his tracks, making a quick movement to the side as he heard whispers of footfalls.

Kae sat in the chair and watched through the screen, grinning the whole time. It was probably wrong to take so much enjoyment watching Amon taunt those poor dumbasses but she really didn't care. He was having fun and that made it even more fun to watch. She frowned when she saw him go still, reaching for one of her guns and rising to head for the side door.

Amon nodded to her as she quietly stepped out onto the lawn, her footsteps whispers on the grass, and motioned his head in the direction he had heard the sound. He was still, listening, and his eyes moved as he heard movement again, the scrape of a footstep… but no heart beat, no sound of breathing… no sign of a living thing. He was not convinced that they were alone.
He pointed to the alleyway adjacent to their street where the housing made way for tired apartment complexes and derelict businesses, mostly closed with dusty “for sale” signs in the windows, with ghosts of mannequins stripped of their clothes and empty display racks. He motioned that he would go up on the rooftops while she investigated aground.

Kae was clad in a thin t-shirt and shorts, tennis shoes worn loose on her feet- it was never a good idea to walk around barefoot in the neighborhood. She nodded to show she understood and crossed the street, glancing side to side constantly and taking everything in, her gun at her side. She stopped at the mouth of the alleyway and peered in, her eyes narrowed into slits as she tried to make out anything in there. Her nightvision was good, not as good as Amon's, but a bit better than your average human's. She caught a flicker of movement and brought her gun up, managing to get off a shot before a wild eyed vampire came sweeping out, crashing into her and throwing her to the ground. She fired a shot into his side but he didn't seem to feel it, which was fairly incredible. He was snarling, lips pulled fully back from his teeth. "Bitch!" Kae brought her arm up into his throat to keep his teeth away from her, bracing herself to hold him off.

As she moved towards the alleyway he ran to one of the buildings, running up the side of it, using window sills holding broken windows or rusted balconies as hand and footholds. He leapt onto the building’s rooftop, the scattered gravel and debris shifting under his feet. He was not trying to be quiet. If there was a vampire he would rather have the attention on himself than on Kae, though it was unlikely that this was to be so for Kae would be a tempting prey.
As the soles of his army boots gripped the edge of the roof, he saw the vampire leap at Kae and knock her down.
“Hey… ugly!” He shouted down at the attacker.
When the vampire lapsed to look up and view the source of the commotion, Amon leapt down, his boots landing with a heavy thud. The minute he had gained purchase, he dove at the vampire, knocking it off Kae. They tumbled to the side, struggling together to gain the upper ground.

The vampire let out a feral howl. "Traitor! Bastard! You betrayed her! You killed her!" Genuine grief underlay his voice and Kae might have felt sorry for him under other circumstances. But she didn't, not when he had her boyfriend pinned to the ground. She couldn't risk shooting the guy without risking harm to Amon so she rolled to her feet and crouched, eyes narrowed.

Amon grunted, trying to shove the vampire that he had him pinned, gritting his teeth.
“Yes, I killed her. She deserved to be wiped from existence.”
He kicked a leg up to the vampires chest and kicked him off, he rolled to his feet and scrambled beside Kae so that she had a clear shot.
“And if you had anything to do with that demon, you deserve the same fate.”

The other vampire howled in outrage but before he could lunge at Amon again, Kae shot him in the head. He might have been crazy enough to ignore the blessed silver bullet in his side but not in his head. He was thrown backward and Kae stepped up to him, firing another shot into his head and then one into his heart. His body jerked spasmodically before going still and dissolving into ash. Kae stepped back, shaking her head, and turned to check him over worriedly. "How many worshipers did that bitch have?"

He was fine, the scratches he had received from the vampire’s nails across his face, neck and chest were already healing over, the flesh knitting into smooth skin, as if they were never there.
“Too many,” Amon replied and shuddered, a jolt of memories running through him. He was unsettled.
“Let’s go,” he raised a hand to her back and began to return to the house, his eyes roaming about in case there were any other of Tlaz’s zealots.

Without Tlaz to keep them organized, her followers didn't tend to hunt in packs, becoming scattered to the wind, but that didn't mean some of them couldn't get their act together. Kae remained as tense as he until they were behind their locked door and the wards and protections were up again. She stalked around the house, making sure every door and window were sealed and protected, before she managed to start relax again.

He wouldn’t be surprised if Tlaz’s followers were out for his blood. Tlaz had been worshipped by those who reveled in blood and death, and the person he loved would be brought as a fitting sacrifice to be slaughtered before his eyes if they had the chance. Blood would run from Kae’s body if they had their hands on her. In response to this thought, he placed his palm protectively against her back, feeling her heartbeat pulse beneath his fingers. She was quite warm to the touch, as she always was.
He helped her secure the premises once they were back inside. It had been a routine between them, automatic. He knew it made her feel secure.

Kae finally looked around once the house was secure. "Do you think all her followers, even the ones in other places, know about you and me?" she finally asked. "We could be fighting these assholes for the rest of our lives." She seemed more irritated than frightened by that idea.

“They know.” He replied, sure of that fact. “They have seen us together, as partners. Perhaps even as lovers.”
“And we will…” he agreed, pulling out his gun to pull out the magazine, reflexively. “All the better to take them out before they get to us.”

"I hope the one in Italy is the biggest one," she muttered. She was angry with the vampire for disturbing them especially when she'd been sleeping well and wouldn't be able to get back to sleep immediately. Sure he was a crazy vampire but that was just rude. She flopped down into the chair in front of her computer and tapped the screen. "At least we've pinpointed where the coven likely is..." she pointed to the screen.

He stooped over her shoulder, resting a hand upon it. “We’ll arrange for tickets online. The natives know where we are, we’re not safe here any longer.”
