She shook her head. There was no room for lost hope, her heart was bursting with joy that he was alive. “We’ll just have to find a different way is all.”

He frowned as he saw the tear stains on her cheeks, "You.. were upset?" He looked away, seeming concerned but not uninterested in that she cared for him. "You know a way?"

Amber smile faded a little. “Yes, you’re my only friend Asher.” She said softly. “I care about you. I thought I lost you.” She shook her head a little, letting in a deep breath and glancing at the tribe a moment. “That was the high ground, the safest ground. Few tribes linger in the mountains during the winter, unlike the Sandaha who follow the saber tooth, most tribes move to warmer grounds until winter passes.” Amber turned her eyes on him again. “There is always a way, though it will not be favorable.”

He nodded, "I will be behind you, wherever you go. I only hope the others can withstand the effort." He gazed around at the paths before them, he wondered if Amber suspected anything as he walked towards the road they must take.

She grinned at him. "I'm glad." She glanced behind her at her tribe. They were disheartened by the lost progess. They missed their kin and those they had lost. Somehow they had to find the will to stay strong. Amber hoped her confidence would keep the tribe moving forward but she knew not how to lighten their hearts. As she watched Asher walking decidedly take a new route she wondered if he knew something she did not. It still remained a mystery how he had escaped the avalanche but she was hesitant to bring the subject up with him. Asher had not revealed how he had cheated death and she assumed it wasn't something he wanted to talk about. Silent, she followed Asher, her people trailing behind.

The path he now walked was one he had before, long ago, he couldn't recall the time but its familiarity was undeniable. The path lead upwards to more winding paths around the peaks, it would get them across but it was much more perilous. He stayed near Amber, he feared for her, but not for himself.

It slightly baffled her how sure his steps were along the thin mountain paths. She glanced up from time to time to make sure that the snow was still clinging peacefully against the peaks as well as every soul aroung her. The mothers gave medicine to their babies so that they may stay asleep and stay silent. Amber hung her head, worry on her brow and a sorrowful look in her eyes. She wondered how her father was doing, if he had found the signs to follow, and if he was safe.

He noticed her expression and strode closer to her, "You worry for the others?"

Amber turned her sad eyes up to his and nodded. "I worry for my father and the others. I wish there was a way to speak with him, to know how he is doing."

He looked down, thinking of a way they could communicate with him, "I could check on him.. but I dare not leave you." He frowned, "You could attempt to reach him in the spirit world.. but it would take a great toll on your physical body to travel that distance."

She considered what he said, torn between the two options. She felt safe, less lonely with Asher watching over her and her people following behind. She ran a hand over the saber tooth, all to willing to do whatever it took to keep her people protected. That measure too would take a toll on her body. She remembered Asher in the form of the panther, the wild look in his eyes. Would she be overcome by the same sense of wild savegry in such a case? "I think it best if I leave this matter in your hands." She glanced up at him. "There a warriors here with me, and I am certain I can protect them in your absence. It won't take long, will it?" No, it may likely take some time, there were so many paths that her father could have taken. She sighed a little and bit her bottom lip.

He frowned a bit, but nodded, "If that is what you want.. I will fly swiftly to find them." He walked to the nearby edge of the trail, it dropped off sharply down the mountain. He looked back at Amber with a sad look, then leapt from the edge of the cliff. The black smoke enveloped him and his raven form emerged, flying away swiftly on the winds that whipped around the peaks. He retraced their steps, flying high above the ground as he surveyed the land between where they were and where the village had been.

He looked so sad. He must have truly reluctant to leave her, but this was the best way. She wished him luck. Hotah and the remaining survivors had followed the signs to a point. They were quietly moving along the edge of the valley not far from the mountain pass. They were uneasy but the tribe with Hotah were more heavily armed, fortunate to have several more surviving warriors that had been close to Amber's father before the earthquake.

Asher spotted them and swooped down and landed in front of Hotah with a burst of smoke, his human from standing with a stumble. His guards were on alert for a moment but relaxed when they realized who it was. "Chieftain, I have come from your daughter's party to check your wellness." He glanced around the group, "Is all well?"

Hotah welcomed the shaman as he revealed himself. "We are well." The others gathered around Asher and Hotah giving words of approval. "I put my daughter into worthy hands. Now our tribe can join together once again"
