"Adrian..." he repeated. He blinked a little. She... was Bates? That strange man? "I really am young," he chuckled a bit. "I didn't know such a thing was possible. But, I haven't met Adrian." He furrowed his brow. "This is a lot to process."

"If you find that strange, darling, you're going to be constantly surprised the more you see this city," she said with the faintest hint of a smile.

He groaned a little and rubbed his face with his hands. "Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to choose New Babylon to surface, but it seemed so interesting. I don't know if I'll be able to keep up."

You could always follow along with us, my boy. Bates' amused voice brushed through his mind.

His eyes snapped open. "You can hear me, Mr. Bates?"

Of course. Perhaps Karine didn't make it clear, the dear girl favors action over words, don't you know. She is an aspect of myself. Granted, she was human once long ago, she has her own mind and such but I can't manifest without her and she wouldn't exist without me.

"Then where are you, Mr. Bates? Why isn't that possible?"

That's a...bit complicated to explain. Strictly speaking I don't exist on the same level you do. I can reach out to anyone I please but in order to have a physical form, I have to have some kind of bond with someone here, if that makes any sense. At this point in time, so to speak, my two darlings do that for me.

Orpheus smiled softly, looking up at Karine. "What does 'following along' entail, Mr. Bates?"

Whatever you like, dear boy. It would be in your best interests, I'd say, to at least find SOMEONE to join up with, at least until you learn the ropes. If not us, Anibel and her sisters run a very lucrative operation, even if they are semi-mortal. Especially with that fool of a fallen angel coming down to start trouble. I never thought I'd find someone more annoying than Marissa.

Orpheus laughed. "It was a strange performance, to say the least. Are they always this interesting? Angels I mean." He smiled at Karine. "If Karine can stand it, I'd like to follow her."

"Oh, they're always entertaining. Everything is a demon to her, you know. She refuses to acknowledge there are gods as powerful as her own out there. It might be she'll finally have to face it in the days to come," Karine said.
Karine, I rather like the idea of an able fighter accompanying you. It's bound to get much more dangerous, especially when people start flocking to the Church, as they surely will. You can't beat Marissa in a fair fight, we've established that, haven't we?
She appreciated the fact he was referring to 'her' instead of 'us', perhaps to soothe her after manifesting. But then again, Bates was much more entwined with Adrian than he was with her, it came with their powers. She was the brawn, he didn't need to back her up the same way he did with Adrian. She nodded, hating to admit needing help but she was no fool. She gave Orpheus a crooked, but genuine smile. "You'd be welcome. Perhaps with help I could actually cause trouble for more powerful people than I have been alone..."

Orpheus grinned at her. "I'm your man."

See, dear, I told you he was our kind of trouble the second I saw him. Show him our temple, I think he'll like it. Bates said, amused.
Karine rose, offering him a hand up.

Orpheus took her hand gently. "Thanks." He stood up and held it for a few moments before letting go. As he followed her, he wondered what kind of temple Bates had arranged. He chuckled a little to himself.
