Thrade smiled sadly. "It's unlikely she'd allow the help even if someone did."

He chuckled. “Perhaps seeing the divine gods firsthand would have changed her mind. The four gods were with us when we banished Datar, they gave me their power. If she is too stubborn to accept assistance, then it is truly her loss.”

"In her defense, Lei, her people's gods were just as impressive in their time," she pointed out. "When you see them all the time, divinity seems commonplace." Thrade was of the opinion that no one was faultless, not even gods, and Shade seemed certain of this.

Lei looked thoughtful. In that case, when her world had been shattered and her people’s gods did nothing to hold it together, he could see why. He nodded to her. “You pose a very valid point, my love. My experiences have worked in my favor, while hers…” He shook his head. “It is a sad thing, when one walks feeling alone in this world.”

"Do you know how her people fell, Lei?" Thrade murmured. "Why they fell? I happened when Shade was a child. They killed their gods, you see. They could be summoned to physical incarnations. Every high priest in that great, floating city summoned their gods...then they killed them. And drank of their blood. The sheer amount of power and the sudden change ripped it out of the sky and into the shadows..."

Lei shuddered visibly. To kill one’s own gods for power… such an abomination. But it was possible, he had no doubt about that. “That is…” He shook his head, simply speechless beyond words.

Thrade smiled sadly. "And the most terrible thing is they weren't the ones that paid the ultimate price. It was their children. And grandchildren, who carry the burden."

“Did they gain immortality, the elder ones?” His brow knit in some anxiety at the thought.

"Shade doesn't know. I suppose its possible for a couple of them," Thrade said thoughtfully. "Most of them were destroyed when the city fell, but who can really tell with such things?"

“And Shade mentioned that her people are scattered across worlds,” he nodded a little to himself. “I feel sorrow for Shade. I may have been an orphan but I have never felt alone. She doesn’t even have a world like we do to call home. She cannot walk on her native soil, cannot hear the laughter of her people’s children or tales from her elders. It sounds like one should make a point to avoid those that may still survive who drank the blood of their gods. I only wish that she may find peace, for there is so much sadness in her.”

"I know...." Thrade huddled against him, feeling suddenly sick and sad. "I think she doesn't know how to not be alone..."

And Hiroshi did not make things any better for her. Lei sighed heavily then looked at Thrade’s face in concern. “Are you unwell?”

"Just tired...and sad..." She laid her head on his shoulder. "You have people like Shinji showing all that's bad with the world and people like Shade...sometimes it makes the whole world seem like a painfully ridiculous place..."

Lei pulled her in tight and kissed her forehead. “Then you should get some rest. It has been a trying day for us all. I am glad that we can put at least one matter behind us now that Shinji has been properly punished for his sins. You don’t think… Shade would?”

"I already told her doing that would ruin everything the emperor worked hard to do and undermine his authority. She wasn't happy about it, but she agreed," Thrade assured him.
