Nikolai looked at Ambra as if she were the only thing keeping his feet on the ground, his head swimming with the memories of times long ago. He blinked as if in a dream. It was clear that this was upsetting Nikolai, gods bless him.
Amon looked at Nikolai’s face, sobered at what he saw there.
“Well start with this location,” Amon looked to Kae. “We’ll keep you updated on our progress. If we find this guy… I’m going to kick the living shit out of him…”
Nikolai chuckled a little at that.

She was squeezing his hand so tightly it would have hurt him if he'd been human, reminding him she was there and she wasn't letting go.
Kae nodded, her face grim. "Even if we don't get all of Tlaz's followers, it'll be worth it if we can stake his ass."

Nikolai looked to his mate and smiled, caressing her palm with his thumb.
Amon drew the map back and began to fold it carefully, setting it back on the table after he did so, and picked up his wine glass. He raised it, then brought it to his lips and emptied it, letting the taste of it swirl on his tongue before a satisfied swallow. He set down the empty glass gently back on the table.
“I know this has been hard on you, Nik, and we appreciate it. We’ll get to the bottom of this, I promise it.”
Nikolai gave them a small smile, raising his own glass in a toast and putting it to his lips. Though alcohol had no effect on vampires, he could still appreciate the taste.

"Be careful, you two." Ambra looked up at them, frowning a bit. She wasn't a seer, per sey, but her intuition was finely honed and if she was worried, it was usually for a good reason and she had a feeling of dread for the two of them. "Very careful."
"As careful as we always are," Kae said cheerfully.
"That isn't reassuring, Kae..."

Amon chuckled. “More than careful,” he assured Ambra. “Completely paranoid.”

Ambra looked slightly reassured but the worry was still in her eyes.
Kae was sorry they'd had to bring so many memories to the surface for Nik but they had a better idea of what to look out for now.
Their flight was a red-eye one, of course. It suited Kae just fine. Fewer people, less of a hassle.

Nikolai and Ambra saw them out as they left, Nik’s hand on the door, the other arm at the small of Ambra’s back.
“Good luck out there. Call us when you’ve landed.”
“Of course,” Amon nodded agreeably and wished them a good night.
Nikolai shut the door quietly, smiling at Ambra. “I’ll make you some dinner.”
---
Ambra had arranged for a first class flight. They could afford it and keep the windows shut tight without any questions as they passed over the ocean. It had been timed so that they would land in pitch darkness. After walking into the airport, in unbroken Italian, Amon requested that an attendant arrange for them to rent a car for a few days.

Early on when she'd been brought back, such a thing would have disconcerted her. Her sensibilities had still been those of a woman in the time she'd been born. Now- with considerable help and encouragement from Kae and Jaz...two thoroughly modern women -she'd learned to enjoy the loosening of gender roles in this day and age. She knew Nik enjoyed cooking even though he didn't eat much and it would help soothe him.
Kae cocked her head and turned from the window...it was dark so it was safe for her to look out it now and she liked watching the lights appear and get bigger as they descended...looking at him. "You're gonna have to teach me how to drive on the other side of the road. I've walked or hitched a ride on a train the times I've been out of the country."

It did make Nikolai happy to keep his hands busy, and he was quite an accomplished cook, having had years of practice. Ambra had physical needs, and gentle as he was, he made sure to keep those satisfied. It pleased him to please her.
------
“There’s nothing to it,” he assured her as they got into the rental, sitting down in the drivers seat. It was a new model, black, with tinted windows as he said he had a sensitivity to sunlight, and since Amon tipped well, slipping a good number of Euro into the attendants hand. It had the newest GPS navigation system, which could be set to several languages, which was not a problem for Amon, but he set it to English anyway, using the keypad to enter the address of their destination. He gunned the engine, which responded with a humming purr.
“Italian cars, gotta love them.” He adjusted the review mirror, put the car in drive, and pulled out of the lot.

"At least you're not one of those guys who refers to the car like it's a woman." She grinned, settling back in the passenger seat. She was glad he set it to English. She could speak Italian but not nearly as fluently as he could. She sobered a bit. "We'll need to find some supplies..." They, of course, couldn't bring all of their weapons.

“Hey, the engine hums like an angel…” He grinned mischievously. “If anything, it’s women that should name the cars after men.” He winked and chuckled, sitting back in the seat as he took the curves like a pro.
Amon cast a glance at Kae. “I’m on that. I made a few calls and arranged for a drop-off point after transferring money, we’re headed there now.”

"If you're gonna risk your life hunting down a coven of crazy vampires, you might as well do it in style," she agreed, chuckling.

“Agreed,” he grinned. He eventually pulled left onto a dirt road, which wasn’t pitted enough to suggest it was abandoned, but simply remote in the countryside. He pulled off the road after spotting a curious looking tree and parked. It was still nighttime, but with the moon they could see clearly. There was a camouflage net masking several wooden crates of varying lengths and sizes behind a line of trees. He drew it off and balled it up, setting it aside. He took his fingers and plied off the top of one, not needing a crowbar with his strength. He tossed it aside and drew out an assault rifle nestled inside strips of paper and lifted it up for Kae to see, turning it in his hands and making sure the magazine was free of ammunition. He set the rifle down, setting the crates beside one another, prying each off the lids until the contents of each were exposed.

Kae admired the weapons with the same level of admiration he admired the car, going through each crate with an enthusiasm might have frightened anyone else. Not surprising, really, for most of her formative years, her weapons had been her best friends. One sign she had started becoming truly comfortable with Amon, even before they were lovers, was the fact she didn't feel the need to keep a weapon in every room when he was around.

Amon sat back and watched her dig around as if she were a little kid at Christmas. He put his gun aside, sat down on the ground and watched her, resting his hands on his knees as he crossed them. It had been a long drive, not that he ached. He could see her clearly, in the moonlight, and to a vampire’s eyes darkness was no hindrance. It took her a few minutes for her to realize that he wasn’t rummaging around any longer.
