"Sound words for someone who wants to survive around here," Karine said quietly.

Orpheus nodded again. "After all, I am young yet." He smiled warmly at her, his eyes twinkling. "I have a lot to learn around here."

Karine found herself quite unable to keep from smiling back. It softened her face and made her appear much younger. He had one of those smiles that just made it impossible not to return it. "Honestly, you never stop learning."

"You stop learning when you're dead, and even then I'm sure the gods will make a compromise." Orpheus chuckled.

Karine let out a surprised laugh and started a bit, as if surprised by the sound of her own laughter. "Very true..."

"What kind of business do you do every day? Hunting down the Sisterhood, for instance. Was that a command from Bates or a more personal matter?"

She frowned a bit. "It's rare for Bates to give me a specific person to kill. Mostly I just keep an eye out for enemies that want to strike at us. More specifically Adrian, his existence seems to offend the senses of those both good and evil."

"Even evil?" He raised a brow, quite surprised.

"Evil has as many facets and shades as good does."

"I suppose that is true," he nodded a little.

Karine rose to her feet, offering him a hand up. "Come." She led him down the halls. "The temple and the garden are about the only things that are truly old around here. The rest of the place is quite livable." She opened a door to reveal a small and simple but beautifully decorated room. "It's yours."

He stepped inside and looked around then turned and faced Karine. "Bates is very generous. Thank you."

Well, we can't expect you to sleep on the slab, now can we? Bates sounded amused.
"Tomorrow, I'll show you the city. Or at least some of it, it's a big city...it'll take a while to see most of it." She chuckled

"I don't think I'd like the slab very much, no." Orpheus laughed. "Thank you Bates," he said again.
He grinned at Karine. "Sounds good."

He was obviously not expected to keep any sort of strict schedule. Karine wasn't around, though Adrian was, directing him to the street when he was ready. Karine stepped out of the shadows, seeming to materialize out of nowhere.
