He smiled a little. “I choose to be guarded about my environment and the people within it. My birth was within a cradle of violence and destruction, I do not fear others of my own kind, and I choose my own battles. It would be good to know who not to cross within New Babylon.”

"A hard thing to know, it shifts and changes every day." She swept a hand toward the street, indicating the city at large. It was full night now, when the city came fully to life, so to speak. Something swooped above them, the stars in the night sky shaded a bit by its form before it disappeared into the night. If he listened, chanting or singing could be heard from nearly every direction. And above it all came the low song humming from the great Church of Light at the center of the city, it's gold enhanced doors open in defiance of the darkness and welcoming all to be part of its purity.

Naturally, his eyes flicked to the sky as the shadow flying above blocked out the starlight, furrowing his brow thoughtfully. Just what manner of demons and gods dwelled in New Babylon? He turned his head towards the center of the city, hearing the humming of prayers by monks and the devout. He frowned lightly.
“Where is that coming from?”

Her full lips curled into a sneer. "The great Church of Light, letting us all know there's nowhere to run in the dark that the light can't illuminate."

"Their blind faith makes up for it, though..." She shook her head, glancing over as a youth came out of the alley, approaching her nervously, his gaze flicking to Orpheus curiously. His face and body were studded with piercings but it was his arms that caught the eye. They'd been twisted into claws, the flesh scarified and reshaped

What bothered him was the fact that the religious clergy of the Light, as well as every single person within the congregation, believed that they were untouchable, that their god gave them resolute power over the forces of darkness. Orpheus glanced over at the misshapen youth stepping back a little bit away from Karine as to not intimidate the boy any further.

Karine said something to him in a low language. Obviously this was who the Sisterhood had been after. The youth nodded and bowed, disappearing into the shadows. Karine turned, saw where he was looking and shook her head, gazing thoughtfully toward the center of the city. "That will be your main enemy, you know. They won't stop until they purify us all."

“There are worse things than religious zealots.” He shook his head.

"Yes, there are religious zealots with great power." She pointed up to the visible steeple of the great church. "They have an archon up there, she destroys anyone who isn't pure. Which is everyone."

He narrowed his eyes a little. “Destroys in what way?”

"She prefers flaying knives for those of us with flesh."

Orpheus winced a little and decided to divert the subject. “You were protecting that boy?” He nodded a little towards where the youth had disappeared.

"Yes, he's one of my lord's newest converts. Adrian is working on him." A hint of a smile played around her lips.

“Is that typical for converts? ‘working on them’?”
