"They went all out," she said excitedly. She checked and loaded one of the larger pistols, looking it over. "When I see Nik's sire, I'm going to put so many holes in him, his own mother wouldn't..." She trailed off when she felt him watching her and looked up, blinking. "What?"

He beamed at her. “Just watching you. It’s nice to see you so excited.” He patted the ground beside him. “Stretch your legs a while, we have a long way to go.”

She did, but she took a couple of the weapons with her, flopping down beside him. She'd been jumpy the whole flight without having a weapon on her.

When she did, he held out his hand reflexively for one of them, for it was a routine to go over weapons to check the internal workings and to clean them and such. He dismantled his weapon so quickly it was done in a blink, having done so habitually. He chuckled to himself. This was no vacation, however, and they needed to discuss their plans. He was slower as he put the gun back together then laid it across his lap.
“We’re going to double back after the job’s through to bring back the weapons, after we’ve completed our mission. I’m sure we’ll find Nik’s sire, and I’ll give you the pleasure of putting a bullet in him, seeing how you and Nik are so close.”
Nik was such a likeable, gentle man, charming but not suave, not in the shit-eat-grin talk you up with false flattery kind of way. He had a quiet way about him. While it was true that Amon knew Nik first by means of Jaz, he seemed closer to Kae than himself. Nik had been drawn to her instantly, and though Kae was no shut in, Nik wanted to bring her up on some social graces.
“We need to go over our plan again. First stop…”

Everyone considered Nik an optimist of the highest level that he would even consider trying it. Kae was alright around people she knew but in social situations in general she was defensive, which made the sharp side of her tongue come out. She also had no tolerance for 'rich fuckers'- a label she applied to pretty much anyone upper class besides Nik -and had no problem saying so. She much preferred dive bars where she could drink shots at the bar and pick fights with bikers.
She dismantled and put her own weapon back together as well. "The biggest village in the area. A coven of vampires that big is going to need a place to feed discreetly. They'll need a bigger place for that, or they'll need to go from village to village. Either way, finding there feeding habits is probably the best way to track them to their lair."

He pulled out his tablet and flicked his fingers over the keys to find what Kae suggested. He turned the screen so Kae would be able to see the layout and pulled his fingers apart across the screen to zoom in the image, first a map, then a dumpy looking website, a low-budget attempt to bring in the tourists that just didn’t visit. There was an advertisement for a hotel and a small petting zoo, sprawling sub-par vineyards and orchards, but not much else.

"Smart," Kae noted. "What do you want to bet the coven has their fingers in whoever runs the town and have taken steps to insure no one is really interested in going there?"

“Perhaps, or they could have acclimated to the environment. They don’t need to invest in a town that’s being used as simply a breeding ground. I wouldn’t be surprised if they had gained a following among the locals. If they feel like part of a selective group, they’ll not be too keen on bringing in outsiders. It’s likely the part of some country-wide committee and not the locals themselves.”

"That's assuming it IS only being used as a breeding ground." Kae buckled a pistol in a holster under her jacket. "Which it probably is, but we should keep an eye out for other stuff too."

“Where there is a breeding ground there is bound to be a whole nest of them, all in theory of course. Well…” He got to his feet. “Let’s get those weapons in the trunk and cover the crates back up. We’re to return them to this location once we finish the mission.”
It seemed that he had arranged for the right car for there were hidden compartments everywhere where they could squirrel away all the ammunition beneath the weapons. As it was, they’d give a patrol officer a heart attack if he were to see the amount they could fit into a single luxury car.
When they were finished, he shut the trunk door shut with a thud and they got into the car just as the first signs that dawn was approaching. The car’s glass had been specially coated, and Amon had been sure to cover up every inch of his body he had, because he wasn’t bothered by the heat, just so the sun wouldn’t give him so much as a rash. This meant that he’d do the driving for the day. He’d only be stopping by hotels for Kae’s sake, and on his insistence, for it wouldn’t do well to sleep in the car for more than a day. At least he could get in and out of the car when it grew dark.
“I don’t get tired,” he reminded Kae well into the morning when she asked if they should switch out if she only crawled around him.
The miles rolled by until they pulled aside at their first hotel for the night. He had pulled food from an electric cooler for Kae when she got hungry, knowing that she’d be worried because they couldn’t stop. But he wanted her to have a good meal at least once a day. So they went out to a restaurant near the hotel. He asked her to choose one.

Kae dozed on and off in the car, figuring she might as well get her rest. Sleeping in the car wasn't a problem for her but a car was so much harder to secure than a room was, so she didn't argue with him about staying in a hotel. She scanned the streets as they drove and finally settled on a middle-of-the road place, not too fancy but not too rundown, both because she was more comfortable with such a place and it was far easier to get information in a place everyone used.

Kae would be used to the color of Amon’s skin beneath artificial lighting, but not others, and a few shrunk back with a shiver. It wasn’t that Amon wasn’t attractive, he was far too attractive, it was the feel of him, the way he carried himself, the black yet sharply tailored clothes he wore. It was different, everything about him was foreign to them. The women looked more amused and interested than the men did. He slid across the table from Kae and asked for wine, was told that they didn’t have wine and just beer and cocktails, Amon smiled easily and asked for a beer. He didn’t order food, was content just for beer. The waitress tipped her hat with her pencil and waited for Kae’s order.

Kae gave her an order and got a beer as well, going over her notes absently.

((In August 2024, many of the roleplays here will be a decade old. I see this roleplay left so unfinished, with KD having posted last, and myself either not noticing, or simply taking a break from roleplay. I miss Lacey every day, and re-reading this roleplay just brings so many emotions up from within me. There is still so much grief, even after a few years. There were possibilities here that could have bloomed into something special. I took our time together for granted, Lacey's and mine. Oh how I wish I could just start this roleplay back up with her like nothing had ever happened and the past decade was simply a long night's sleep.
Lacey, I have so many regrets, and I miss you.
I'm going to go cry in my pillow tonight.))
