He put his arms around her securely. There wasn't much to be done about that. Either the People were too comfortable in this secluded world to venture out of it or too proud.

Sometimes it frustrated her although she knew they had a long time and powerful allies. As long as they survived assassination attempts, they had centuries to help reform their society. As long as she had Tal, she could do anything.

Vladik had perched himself on the edge of the balcony, looking up at the rising moon. He put aside the whetstone he had been using to sharpen his weapons and sheathed them, letting in and out a long sigh.

There was a soft shuffling sound and a chirrup. Rauni dropped down from the edge of the roof, climbing up onto the balcony's edge beside him.

Not the way we do or animals do. They go...dormant. Except evergreens. They're always prickly. She made a little huffing sound, amused by her own joke.
